My boyfriend is going to run a Dresden Files RPG, so I've been working on my character for that lately. To help flesh him out, I decided to do an OC summary for him, and encourage to other players to as well, just for SAGs. There will be pictures in the future too.
Appearance:
Personality:
History:
Romance:
Symbolism:
Showing the Love:
RANDOMIZE!
PlayList! Three songs that remind you of your OC (despite whether he/she would listen to the music or not)
The Final Question:
What would you consider your relationship with your character to be like?
Right now, fairly decent. He actually likes the quirks I've given him.
Alistair:
I would be far less interesting otherwise.
- What's your character's name?
Alistair Liddell.
Alistair: It's a masculine take on Alice Liddell, the titular character of Alice in Wonderland. - How old is he/she?
26.
Alistair: Same as my creator, for ease. - Is your OC a boy or girl?
Male.
Alistair: And there is no confusion there. - What's his/her race?
American. More broadly, Caucasian.
Alistair: I have some British ancestry, but I'm not too interested in my heritage. Well, racially speaking at least.
Appearance:
- If this character were to suddenly become part of the 3D world, and ended up in a heavily-populated area, how many stares would he/she get?
I'd say a few. He is a little odd looking, if only because of his clothes.
Alistair: I'm covered in paint half the time, on account of my hobby/job. - Is your character considered normal in his/her own world?
Eh, not really. Ever meet one of those people who creep you out just by looking at them? He's kind of like that.
Alistair: The fact that I always look tired or sick doesn't help. - What would be his/her most recognizable feature(s)?
His eyes. Or that he usually has paint all over his clothes.
Alistair: By eyes, I think she means how tired and sunken in they look... - Would you consider your OC as attractive?
No...
Alistair: *shrug* Don't expect anyone to, but at least people don't think I'm grotesque. Just... creepy.
Personality:
- Temper:
Passive aggressive. He doesn't fly off the handle, but the fact that he doesn't seem to get angry at all tends to unnerve people.
Alistair: There's a reason, I assure you. If I wasn't... well, you'll see below. I'm not a sociopath, but some people think I might be. - Does your character ever get depressed?
Surprisingly not, all things considered.
Alistair: I have more serious problems than depression. - Leader or Follower?
Follower.
Alistair: Hard to be a leader when people don't trust you to lead. - What is the main aspect of his/her personality?
Detached.
Alistair: They don't say I have one foot down the rabbit hole for nothing. See below.
History:
- Does your OC have a family of any sort? If so, are they still alive?
Two parents and a younger sibling. He had an older brother, but he died. He doesn't see any of them any more.
Alistair: They're afraid of me. - Is your character out on his/her own? If so, why?
Yes. He graduated with a degree in art and has been trying to make his way as a painter.
Alistair: It's been an on and off success, but I'm barely making my bills. - Has he/she encountered any traumatizing events?
Constantly. He's schizophrenic, so he's nearly always plagued by hallucinations. He also killed his older brother when he was eight.
Alistair: I passed through two locked doors without unlocking them to do it, because I hated him. I smothered him with a pillow. This is why my family is afraid of me. - What was probably the best time in his/her life so far?
When he came to terms with his condition and realized not everything he was seeing was a trick of his mind.
Alistair: My Sight is broken, but knowing that I'm not completely mad is a great relief. Even if no one believes me.
Romance:
- Single?
Yes.
Alistair: Par for the course when you have a personality disorder like mine. No woman would touch me. I don't think any men would either. - Has your OC developed any romantic relationships?
None.
Alistair: See above. - Virgin?
Yes.
Alistair: Again, see above. - Does your character like flirting?
He doesn't know how.
Alistair: I'm better at scaring people.
Symbolism:
- What animal would you associate your OC with?
Hmm... a raven.
Alistair: Going for Poe influence now? - What/Does your OC's name mean anything?
According to my name book, Alistair means "defending men," possibly appropriate, since he has to defend his mind against all the things he sees.
Alistair: And it sounds a lot like Alice. - Musical Instrument?
Violin, for the variety of crazed sounds it can make.
Alistair: Be they haunting or horrifying. Kind of like my hallucinations. - Element?
Water.
Alistair: I am a rather mellow person. Usually. - Planet?
Mercury.
Alistair: Art reference?
Showing the Love:
- Do you draw your character?
Working on a render now.
Alistair: She even gave me custom textures. - Do you write about him/her?
I may, but likely not, since I have other projects.
Alistair: I'm content with being a simple RPG character. - Do you use him/her in any rpgs?
Duh.
Alistair: See above. - What other ways have you appreciated your OC?
Gave him way more depth than I initially thought I would.
Alistair: You do that with a lot of characters you love.
RANDOMIZE!
- Is your character wanted for anything?
Murder, though he was cleared of this, since there was no possible way he could have gotten out of his room (locked from the outside, no windows) and into his brother's (locked from the inside) without help, and he was too young to understand what he had done. Either way, it was humanly impossible.
Alistair: No, just mundanely impossible. I didn't know the door was locked, so it was unlocked for me. - What are three weaknesses in him/her?
Tends to err on the side of caution by believing most of what he sees is real, reality doesn't work quite right for him, and he's schizophrenic.
Alistair: How does the saying go? Better to be afraid of a hundred shadows than miss one tiger... or something like that. - Strengths?
He's a fairly adept conjurer and trompe-l'oeil artist, plus he has an odd reality warping ability.
Alistair: I literally reject your reality and substitute my own. Like with locked doors. Though I don't always have control of it. - Does your OC drink or smoke (ect.)?
No.
Alistair: I'm messed up enough. - What's one quirk about him/her?
His reality warping ability, mostly. He can deny the existence of things to the point that they don't exist for him.
Alistair: Doesn't work on people though. - Does your character have any phobias?
No.
Alistair: The things I fear are all too real. Even the imaginary ones. - What could you do to get him/her into a blind rage?
You won't see the rage, but not paying him for his artwork, or significantly cheating him out of his proper pay.
Alistair: Here's a hint: I use my painting as a focus for my conjuring. You'd be amazed what sorts of things I can bring to life... - Does your OC like chickens?
No.
Alistair: You should see what they really look like. You'd never be able to eat KFC again.
PlayList! Three songs that remind you of your OC (despite whether he/she would listen to the music or not)
- Sick ~ Evanescence
Alistair: Hmm... allusion to my delusions? - White Rabbit ~ Blue Man Group version
Alistair: One of the trippiest versions of that song, I think. - Welcome to Mystery ~ Plain White T's
Alistair: If only everything I saw was this pretty.
The Final Question:
What would you consider your relationship with your character to be like?
Right now, fairly decent. He actually likes the quirks I've given him.
Alistair:
I would be far less interesting otherwise.
100 Themes Challenge: Midjourney Edition
I have decided to try the 100 Themes Challenge again, since I ran out of steam last time. In Regards to AI Art
As you might have noticed, I've recently started playing around with Midjourney, using it as a tool to help visualize various characters for D&D and my writing. While I do think there are a lot of problems with AI generated art (namely, the means by which the AI is trained), I think it has the potential to be used effectively as another piece of an artist's toolbox, much in the same way as Photoshop and similar software. That being said, I will personally always indicate the workflow for pieces I create using a Midjourney output as a base, and I will never upload a pure, unedited output without noting it as such (and will most likely only put them in scraps). That all being said, I understand the controversy, and I'd like to share an interesting video I found on the subject, which helped me put a lot of things into perspective:
Another Life Upheaval
Just when my husband and I were finally starting to get settled into the apartment -- after a whirlwind of wedding, COVID, and other family issues -- we get a notice that the owner/landlord has decided to sell, and we have until the end of September to move out. We haven't even been here a year, and we're already expected to pack up and leave. My anxiety has been through the roof, but after a few days to calm down, I'm feeling less anxious and more angry. We haven't even had our honeymoon (which it looks like we'll have to postpone again). I feel bad for not getting much art done, but things have been so chaotic, it's a wonder I'm still in one piece. Wish me luck, everyone.
Feeling Creative, But Uninspired
2020 has been a crazy year for me. Between the pandemic, my mom passing (heart disease), gaining weight (almost 30 lbs :( )moving to a new apartment, getting married, the election, and all the other little things that go along with that, I have been physically and mentally exhausted. I haven't even had the energy to plan D&D games. But now, with things finally, finally beginning to return to normalcy, I find myself wanting to render again. I just don't know what. Part of me wants to work on portraits for some of my characters for an upcoming Western D&D game my husband (it is so weird writing that) is going to run next year. Another part wants to do something with some of my old characters. I really don't know. I may just have to wait until the new year comes, and things have really settled, but I'm not leaving deviantART any time soon. There will be uploads again. I just don't know when.
