Edge of Thorns 2 - Pt 53Part 53
Too much is going on. I need to think this through before acting. But first...
Nathan hurriedly moved out of the way of the door, getting several feet away and almost next to Micah before he opened fire. Each shot hit its mark with a loud clang, and the last hit the window square in the center, but not a single one left any dent in the door. Not even a chip in the glass. A faint blue glow from the freezer revealed why.
"I told you it wouldn't work," Alton drawled on the other side. "Micah, I know you can't abandon your charge, but the only way this door will open is either by dispelling the circle and breaking it down, or finding the key."
"Can we dispel it?" Susan asked. "What does that mean, anyway?"
"It means countering and overriding the spell that is in place." Micah's hand shook as he returned the gun to its holster and approached to door again. His lips were press in a tight line, and he stared into the freezer. "Lu, do you know where the key is? Dispelling

I can't leave him here, but there's no way Susan and I can break the lock...
The writer started, but then took a deep breath and slowly backed away from the door. Susan watched him, face quickly contorting with worry. "Where are you going? We... we have to get him out of there, don't we?"
"Yes." Nathan turned to her and motioned her over. "But we need help. I don't think either of us can crack the lock on that door and breaking it down is out of the question. We need to go back and find Micah and..."
"Did I not tell you both to stay behind me?"
Susan shrieked and quickly covered her mouth when the angel appeared beside her, stumbling back into the wall. Micah rolled his eyes and stepped towards Nathan. "I trust you have a good explanation?"
The writer cringed but nodded and pointed towards the door. "Found Alton."
First, Micah's glowing eyes turned towards the tiny window, then he stepped up to it, looking inside. He frowned, then sighed. "Lumiel..."
"Don't you da

I have a feeling she'll try to help, no matter what I tell her to do. Best I explain things to her.
The writer drew a deep breath and looked out the window: Micah was leaning against his car, waiting. He'd have to be quick. "Sit down," Nathan said to her, letting out a sigh. "I'm about to make myself sound completely insane."
Susan did as told, slipping down onto the couch, her hopeful gaze never leaving his face as he ran his fingers through his hair and began to pace. "Does that mean I can help?"
He swallowed the knot in his throat, but nodded. "Yeah, but this is a lot more complicated than you can imagine. A lot more... weird."
"Just... hear me out entirely before you say anything, okay?"
Susan nodded and waited patiently for him to begin. "Okay."
"Good. So, first, Micah out there isn't exactly human..."
Nathan gave her a quick rundown of the basics: who the angels were and the Sins they were trying to find. He told her that Wren had been possessed

When presented with undesirable options, make a new one.
Nathan took a deep breath, willing himself to at least appear calm for Susan's sake. "We can't tell anyone about this," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "But I think I know someone who can help. Can you wait here a minute?"
The photographer nodded, wringing her hands, and Nathan picked up his cell phone and made for the front door.
"I'll give him a call."
As soon as he stepped out, however, he tucked the phone away. Still holding the note, and after looking to make sure the hall was clear, he swallowed back his nerves and tried to speak Micah's Name. The words that came from his mouth didn't sound real, and he couldn't believe he was actually speaking them, however soft and shaky they were. The moment the last syllable left his lips, he was aware of another presence with him.
"You know what happened to Lumiel."
Nathan turned towards Micah when he spoke, the angel leaning against the wall, eyes close

I have to tell him. I don't want this to get worse...
"Okay! Okay!" He tried to pull back from her, but couldn't compel his body do what he wanted it to, instead continuing with the dance. The angel laughed as she let herself be guided into he next step, hooking her leg around his.
"What's wrong, Nathan?" Dawn asked sweetly, mockingly, meeting his gray-eyed gaze with hers, the smirk on her lips devious. "Feeling like things have gone out of your control?"
The writer clenched his jaw, stepping in time to the music. He twirled her around like the other dancers, pulling her close to his body. He couldn't tell whether his heart was racing in panic or something else. "This isn't funny, Lumiel..."
"No? I think it's hilarious." She laughed again as Nathan picked her up in a lift. Her blue eyes flashed. "I want to be absolutely sure that we're clear this time: you will tell me right now how you know where I'm keeping Avaritia."
"I said okay!" Nathan snapped, his vo
Blue Eyes in FlamesWhen the prince sees the flower bloom from the palm of her hand, he orders her arrest.
She is only seven years old.
He takes the flower from her and keeps it, even though he knows he shouldn't. He puts it a vase, or, rather, his servant does that for him. The flower doesn't ever die, even years later.
It's dawn of a December morning, and he's cold. But still, he stands next to his father dutifully and looks at the little girl with blue eyes that are now black from seven nights sleeping on a cold, dungeon floor behind bars. They cut off her dark brown hair during that time. She's tied to the pyre, and there are seven guards around her, holding sharper swords than normal, not that she could get away. There's one man dressed in black holding an unlit torch, with a mask over his face to prevent his death. His father raises his arm, and the torch is lit.
She locks her gaze to his, and he blinks at her. It's like she expects him to prevent it. He couldn't, though, he can't. She scares him, w
