I need to at least be honest about Gula, and maybe I should tell them I know about Alton too. But since they're worried about how I'll handle things, I think I'll play ignorant otherwise.
Nathan took a deep breath and nodded. "At least, I think I do," he said first. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she's one of the Seven Deadly Sins, specifically Gluttony."
Enya snorted and laughed, shaking her head, though her brother smiled and nodded.
"Don't know how you figured that one out, but you're on the nose. We'd only gotten so far as figuring out she was the manifestation of a Sin."
"He knows Latin, doofus," his twin reminded him with a nudge. "I bet her name gives it away."
Nathan couldn't help but chuckle a bit. "Well, it is the Latin word for appetite."
"We should have thought to look that up," Scott mumbled, starting to laugh too. "Anyway, we haven't quite finished assessing her threat level yet, but that does help with our notes."
It was Enya's turn to nod. "We've been keeping an archive of all the beings we've encountered in Virtue, their true natures, and their threat level to the general populace. We've got Gula's threat level currently listed as unknown, since she hasn't done anything noteworthy yet. Well, besides glue herself to Gloria's hip. The two seem to get along well enough."
"Amusing, I think," Scott added. "Since Gloria can put away a platter. I don't mean that as a jab!" he insisted when Enya shot him a glare. "I mean, really, the woman can eat. Where she puts it is a mystery to me, always was, but I have a hunch that has something to do with Gluttony liking her. I don't know. We'll have to see how things go from here."
Nathan smiled and leaned back in his chair, suddenly remembering their was food in front of him and sitting up again to take a few more bites of his lunch. "While we're on the subject of the supernatural, how close am I in saying that the owner of Sterling & Son isn't human?"
"That one I'm not surprised you remember," Enya said with a shrug, digging back into her plate. "Alton has been something of an enigma during this whole thing. He said you may be a little hazy on things after your little accident." She tapped the side of her head. "I wouldn't be half-shocked if he didn't cause your injury for some twisted reason. We have him listed as an orange threat."
"He's an angel... demon... something." Scott rolled his eyes. "Real name's Lumiel, or Lucifer. Or Satan. He keeps changing his mind."
"We classify the supernatural entities we find by color," his twin went on. "Green means totally benign (honestly haven't found any of those yet), yellow means we're unsure (Gula's current status), and red mean dangerous. We had to make the orange category for Alton, since he seems to be relatively benign, but has shown himself to be extremely powerful and dangerous if pushed. And sometimes it's hard figuring out what's going to push him."
Nathan listened to them talk, looking back and forth between them while they explained. It was weird seeing them so in sync, how they almost seemed to be completing each other's thoughts. If it weren't for the differences in their voices, he'd almost think it was one person talking. "What other entities have you found in Virtue?"
The twins looked at one another -- the motion was becoming almost comically repetitive -- then back at him while the shrugged in unison. "Not sure it's worth mentioning," Scott told him. "Most of the ones we have listed have been dealt with already, or we've lost track of them."
"Really, the worst of things are the Sins, which is totally something Alton's done," Enya continued. "Avarice and Wrath are the only ones besides Gluttony we've seen recently: the former green and the latter red, but MIA."
"What did Wrath do?" Nathan stopped mid-bite to ask his question. He'd thought the murders hadn't happened, so what had the Sin done to cause them to still recognize her as a threat?
"Well... nothing. Yet." Scott seemed to blush while he frowned. "We only caught a glimpse of her, right after your accident. We're not sure if she started the stampede or if Alton did, or if she did so at Alton's behest. But we felt it was better to play it safe and consider her dangerous until further notice." He swallowed loudly. "I have a really bad feeling something's going to happen between now and Christmas, and it doesn't sit well with me..."
"But," Enya cut in, somewhat cheerfully. "Since you're aware of things anyway, maybe we have a shot of finding and slowing her down." She gave Nathan a smirk. "I mean, they do seem to like you..."
"En!" Her twin looked completely mortified by what she was implying. "We're not using him as bait again."
"I'm not saying that! Besides, it's up to Nathan whether he wants to help or not." Her smile turned sheepish. "Sorry, it's just really hard not to take advantage of that magnetism thing you have going. We could just wait and keep our eyes peeled, but I just figured that, you know, maybe if you deliberately tried to get Wrath's attention, we'd have a better shot of containing things. Eliminate the surprise factor and what not." She bit her lip, slowly frowning. "I don't want you to get hurt again, Nathan. I just... don't want anyone to get hurt by these things either..."
Reminds me a lot of when this whole thing started, when I was told the Sins would be drawn to me. I do want to help, but being bait sounds like a bad idea, no matter how you phrase it. What should I tell them?
