Edge of Thorns 3 - Pt 42Part 42
Better see what's going on. There has to be a reason she's here again.
Rubbing his hand across his face, he looked around to see if anyone had noticed before he got up from his seat and went over to the woman, sitting down beside her. "What are you doing here, Avaritia?" Nathan asked, his tone hushed. "I thought Lumiel locked you away."
"He did," she told him with a wide, bubbly smile while she bounced in her seat. "But he said he needed me here, so I'm here!"
"That doesn't make any sense..."
"Hey!" She pouted at him and poked him in the chest. "I don't make the rules. I just play by them. If my sisters are becoming too much for him to control..."
"Why would he enlist one of them?" Nathan cut in, looking back at her. "Alton's not stupid (or at least I hope he isn't). When your sisters are working against him, why would he trust you to help him?"
The Sin sighed and crossed her arms. "I don't know. It's not like I have any motives against him. Maybe th

I should at least go to the auditions with her. She knows I'm not busy.
"Alright," Nathan agreed with a chuckle. "Just let me get dressed. And really, don't worry about lunch. I'm fine without it."
"Oh. Okay." Susan giggled nervously. "I'll meet you in front of your apartment in a few?"
"Sounds like a plan."
A few minutes later, as promised, Susan arrived in her car. She'd dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and a black and purple striped top the fell loosely over her shoulders, and she gave Nathan a shy smile as he hopped in on the passenger's side, carefully tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "So, you're sure you don't want to do lunch after? There's a really nice pizza place within walking distance of the theater."
"I'm good, thanks," he said, trying not to disappoint her, but really not wanting to go. He was getting nervous just going to this audition, even though he wasn't the one trying out. "So, you're trying for a back-up singer in Enya's band, huh? Ev

He should at least know I saw Ira, but I think I'll keep Gabriel's involvement out of it.
Nathan drew a deep breath and shrugged, shaking his head. "Ira was here, but she's gone now. Don't know how she got out, but..."
"I think Lumiel and I will need to have a talk soon," Micah said with a sigh, followed by a sneeze. The angel frowned. "Perhaps when I am less obviously ill."
"I'll talk to him," Gabriel offered, giving Nathan a grateful smile for not telling him exactly where Ira went. "But now, let's check on Scott. That's the whole reason we came here in the first place."
Micah nodded, producing the key he'd gotten from the front desk, and unlocked the door to the reporter's room. Inside, the lights were on (since the blinds had been closed) but it looked almost uninhabited, except for a couple of suitcases leaning against the wall. There was no sign of Scott either, until the reporter appeared from the bathroom, holding an icepack to his head. He gave them all a

Across the bridge and through the passageway they'd previously only glimpsed, Alistair made his way on his own. The tunnel itself was narrow, and he had to squeeze some before it opened into another large chamber, this one with a myriad of exits to chose from. With a small sigh, the conman crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. "Well," he muttered to himself. "Looks like you've chosen quite the rabbit hole to explore, Mr. Liddell. Do try not to get lost." He ran his fingers through his hair. "Though I suppose one can't really get lost when he has nowhere in particular he's going. Let's see now..."
He began counting his various options, but then stopped. The light from his flashlight was ample enough, but just outside its beam he spotted another, dimly glowing speck. Alistair clicked off his light to see it better. Once he was sure he knew where it was, he turned his light on again so he could see his way and get a closer look.

After everyone had had some mending, the group moved onward again. Guy still took the lead, despite being stuck as a cheetah, and Snow was right behind him, albeit supported by Alistair. It was a peculiar situation for the wizard, letting the man she knew was potentially dangerous help her, but she had little choice: there was no way she was letting Parker give her a hand after he was the reason she needed one, and she didn't want to give Artemis the satisfaction of her needing his help. And Guy was a cheetah. That only left Alistair, and as apprehensive as she was about him, she at least had to admit he was very patient with her limited mobility. And eager to help. Actually, the more she thought about, the more she realized he was more angry at Parker than anyone else for what he did, and he wasn't even caught in the spell.
It made her feel somewhat guilty about the ward she'd made around her tent the night before.
"Alistair?" Snow said quietly,
Nine TimesI saw him nine times.
The first time we were both sitting in the room together, getting ready to take the math test that would determine our placement. I was scatterbrained and throwing things around, trying to find the pencils that I had known I would need but had still just tossed in my purse. He was lounging backwards in his chair, looking for all the world as though he didn’t have a single care in the world, including the upcoming test. It annoyed me, that I was frantic and ready to scream, while someone else could be that relaxed.
I tested out of the class.
I don’t know if he did.
The second time I saw him, it was a few months after I arrived on campus. He was the one rushing and frantic this time, running across the square. He was probably late for class, though I had no way of knowing for sure. I was already lost in my own thoughts and ideas, deciding on my major and convincing people that yes, this is what I really want to do with my life. If they weren
